Australian artist

Hawkins, Sheila (1905-1999)

An informal portrait of the artist Sheila Hawkins (later Bowden), painting at her easel in her studio; taken in Hampstead, London, England. c. 1944; donated by the artist to the collection of the Australian war Memorial P02253.002

In the 1920s Hawkins studied briefly at the National Gallery of Victoria School. She moved to London in 1931, where she wrote and illustrated children's books. In 1942 she applied for official war artist status but was not selected. However she found employment at RAAF Headquarters in London and later spent time in Scotland depicting the Australian Forestry Units.
