Hele, Ivor (1912-1993)

Hele began his art studies with James Ashton in Adelaide at the age of seven. In 1928 he travelled to Europe studying in Paris and Munich. At the end of 1940 he joined the 2/48th Infantry Battalion in North Africa. In 1941 he was appointed an official war artist, serving in North Africa, New Guinea and, in 1952, in Korea. Hele's robust, sculptural forms are influenced by Michelangelo and Rubens.
