- Inscription (inside cover/ couverture à l'intérieur) : Cartoons by Beulah Jaenicke of the Canadian Woman's Army Corps (CWAC) while posted at National Defence Head quarters, Ottawa from October 1942 to November 1945 after basic training at Vermilion Alberta. Employed by the Department of Recruiting as an artist and billeted for one year at Glebe barracks. The rank of private for ten months till recommended for officer training, then promoted to rank of Cadet. Received OTC training at Ste/ Anne de Bellevue near Montreal Sept. + Oct 1943. Graduated as a 2nd Lieutenant Nov 1/43 and posted to Dept. of Army Promotion NDHQ, becoming a 1st Lieutenant by June 1944. Worked on various "Promotion" projects including a number of CWAC promotional films produced by Nat'l Film Board. Producing cartoons was done spontaneously for 3 years, contributing to the army newspaper "Khaki" and the CWAC Newsletter which was sent to women posted Overseas. (p1) Illustrations for stories submitted by CWAC women (p2) Scratch boards mixing with civilians barrack huts (p3) Persuaded by my own experience that girls in the CWAC were not all "butches", I created these favorites of Gunnarson at CWAC Newsletter. (p4) A feminine remembrance of autumn's pleasures (small cartoon) and two remembrances of eating in barracks. The cook really wore those outfits! There was an Army Cooking School at Ste. Anne de Bellevue, P.W. The food when I was at OTC was fabulous! (p6) wartime winter in Canada (p.7) More summer off duty enjoyment. Remindfull of my winning the broad jump at a sports meet summer of 1943. (p10) Another lecture in barracks probably on V.D.again! Two pretty CWAC's Two pretty CWAC's (p11) Illustration fro a poem about post war hopes and dreams (p12) I like this one. I spent three long winters in Ottawa in uniform. (p13) for Christmas Newsletter (p14) More about Christmas winter etc. (p15) My friend Capt Bob Eve's favorite of my cartoons. It was a doodle I almost threw out. He was a New Yorker magazine fan. (p17) The ballet dancing cartoon is not kind to fat girls. I hat it! Above sewing on a 3 year insignia denotes annoyance that the was is lasting too long. A sergeant on parade. (p19) Illustrations to story about changing cubicles (rooms) in barracks or from one hut to another. (p20) An article on summer fun off duty and perils of Poison Ivy (p21) These were used to Illustrate CWAC Newsletter reports of overseas doings by girls lucky enough to get poster to Britain. (p23) In barracks reprinted often. Looks like a Gary oak Victoria B.C. why I did it?? (p24) New Years Resolutions 1. I shall not go A.W.O.L once, not even when Clarence comes to town on his next forty eight nor on my birthday, nor when the C.O. bawls me out for being in the bathroom putting up my hair after light out. 2. I shall not snore at night. 3. I shall not bum cigarettes except from Pte. Burglebarid who bums from me. 4. I shall not hog the top of the bureau in our cubicle even through I have six photographs, one vase with artificial flowers in it, one statue of a nude baby, and a pearl on amber toilet set to put on top of it. 5. I shall not skip breakfast parade except when L/Col Brown, A.M. who is a pal of mine takes the parade. 6. I shall eat turnips even though I hate them. 7. I shall get my vitamins by taking the Cod Liver Oil extract that mother sent me after Christmas last year. 8. I shall not soak my clothes in the laundry tub overnight, nor shall I snitch any panties with elastic that I see around. 9. I shall not use Pte. Purvis-Smiths's lower bunk as catch all for my blankets, cleaning kit, hat, gloves, etc. any more than absolutely necessary. 10. I shall not beef about the Army in any manner or shape what-soever unless somebody else brings up the subject first. (p25) My own silly creation fond memories of a year in barracks. Could I have stood three? (back cover/couverture arrière) PROPERTY OF BEULAH JAENICK ROSEN 107 MASON TERRACE OTTAWA
