Canadian recruiters worked actively in the United States to solicit men for so-called "American" battalions in the Canadian Expeditionary Force, ultimately raising five: the 97th, 211th, 212th, 218th, and 237th. None of these units actually made it to France; like most units raised after mid-1915, they were broken up and used as reinforcements. Close to 40,000 Americans served in the Canadian forces during the war, most of whom crossed into Canada to enlist.
