Rum Tot
The issue of rum to soldiers was part of a long-standing military tradition that stretched back to the mid-seventeenth century. This rum measure would have been used for official rum rations, usually no more than two ounces. It had to be consumed in the presence of the disposing officer or non-commissioned officer so that soldiers could not hoard it.
