The Conquerors
Painted in 1920 by Eric Kennington (1888–1960)

Previous | Next

Originally entitled The Victims, both dead and living soldiers march over the bones of their fallen companions in a shattered landscape. The dead are distinguished by their white faces and dark-rimmed eyes.

"I am very doubtful about Eric Kennington, his whole style of work is utterly remote from and undescriptive of the western front, and is no use for purposes of record."

— John Buchan, future Lord Tweedsmuir and Governor General of Canada, 1917
