Ballet of wind and rain was Painted in Holland or Belgium late in the war, in February 1945, when Colahan was travelling through recently liberated regions of war-torn Europe during his second appointment to paint the Australian forces. This work, with its loose brushwork, captures four fighter pilots combating the elements. As Allied forces advanced into north-west Europe, squadrons were based in Holland and Belgium to support the European war's final campaigns.
