Bergner, Yosl (b. 1920)

Bergner was born in Vienna and spent his childhood in Warsaw. He arrived in Australia in 1937 at the age of 17. Inspired by European modernism his early work is influenced by French artists Daumier, Cézanne and Courbert. He later produced strong social-realist paintings. Bergner enlisted in 1942 and served in an army labour company.
