Freedman, Harold (1915-1999)

War artist Harold Freedman pictured in his studio preparing for an exhibition of his war paintings ; taken in Melbourne Victoria, c.1946; donated by the artist to the collection of the Australian War Memorial; P00925.001

Freedman studied at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology between 1920 and 1935. He enlisted in the RAAF in 1941 and was appointed an official war artist by the RAAF Historical Unit in 1944 until 1945. In 1968 he was commissioned by the Memorial to paint a large mural depicting the history of Australian military aviation.
